The National Aviary on the North Side is mourning the loss of one of its more popular birds.

The Aviary announced Tuesday that Benito, a Hyacinth Macaw male, died over the weekend due to an aneurysm.

The well-known bird was once featured on an episode of Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood.

Benito came to the Aviary in the 1990s.

The Aviary says Benito’s mate, Sapphira, “is a very confident, gregarious bird.”

They say they are monitoring her in the Tropical Rainforest part of the Aviary and will “adjust her care base don her needs if necessary.
