Sewickley Public Library is celebrating 150 years serving the community.
The recently had a book returned that was checked out when the library was 96-years-old.
The library recently announced on Instagram that a copy of “Beowulf” was returned 54 years after it was originally borrowed.
It was taken out in January 1969.
Fines were 5 cents at the time and would have collected nearly $1,000 in fines since but, “in reality, we would have charged the cost of this item since it's been gone so long. That means the borrower would owe....$0.98, which is how much it cost to purchase the title in the 1920s.”
The good new is Sewickley Public Library is a free library.
“As long as library users return borrowed items, their account will be cleared and they can continue to check out materials to their heart's content,” SPL added.
They’re using the returned book as a reminder that it’s never to late to bring something you borrowed back.
