PITTSBURGH (100.1 FM and AM 1020 KDKA) — In a new attempt to bolster the presence of Catholic schooling in the southern region of the Diocese of Pittsburgh, board members are preparing for mergers of elementary schools.
Four elementary schools are planned to go through the merging process for the upcoming 2021-2022 academic year, and Bishop David Zubik made that decision after receiving advice from South Regional Catholic Elementary Schools (SRCES) leaders.
To be clear, there will be two cases of two schools fusing, not a consolidation of four schools.
The first instance will be Saint Gabriel of the Sorrowful Virgin in Whitehall and Saint Elizabeth of Hungary in Pleasant Hills.
The newly formed school will adopt Saint Gabriel's campus as the primary schooling site.
The second merger will feature Saint Margaret of Scotland in Green Tree and Saint Philip in Crafton, and the new main campus will be the original Saint Margaret.
Careful thought went into the decision after financial considerations and enrollment trends.
"Each day, I thank God for all who faithfully support our Catholic schools. They serve our students, our diocese, and Jesus Himself," Bishop Zubik said.
"Catholic schools are vital to the future of both our Church and our world. They educate minds, hearts, and spirits, teaching the value of service as they prepare young people to become productive citizens and future leaders."
