Chartiers Valley votes to outsource bus services

Pittsburgh's Headlines: June 24, 2026

Chartiers Valley School District is moving forward with outsourcing its bus service after a narrow board vote Tuesday night.

District bus drivers and parents urged school leaders to reject the proposal, saying the change would impact safety and jobs.

One district employee also raised concerns during Tuesday’s meeting about leadership compensation, saying the Superintendent, Dan Castagna, and his secretary are being paid too much.

Despite community opposition, the board voted 5-4 to approve a transportation services agreement with First Student.

First Student will begin on July 1 and 41 district transportation employees were furloughed.

The district says First Student has committed to hiring all current transportation workers with an eight-and-a-half percent pay increase.
