A proposal to classify high school football teams by roster size and winning records instead of enrollment is getting widespread pushback.
Fox Chapel officials say they’re asking WPIAL for the realignment not only for competitive balance but also player safety.
Fox Chapel has recently asked opponents to shorten their games because the lack of competitive balance produces a greater chance for injuries. WPIAL officials will make the final decision on the realignment proposal.
An alternative idea is for schools like Fox Chapel and Baldwin to leave WPIAL and play opponents they’re better matched with much like Butler has done.
Finally, there’s the option of dropping football altogether. The sport need not be mandatory.
