KDKA Radio Editorial: Divisive Dispute With Nonprofits Not Helpful

Pittsburgh is witnessing a divisive dispute over the non-profit status of its biggest employer and four other large nonprofits.

The Gainey administration recently announced challenges of more than 100 properties owned by the nonprofits, 61 of them by UPMC.

To begin, this issue was decided ten years ago when a court dismissed a city lawsuit to strip UPMC of its tax exempt status. Now the Gainey administration is trying an expensive legal end-around.

The mayor campaigned on meeting with the major nonprofits to reach an agreement on paying what he calls a fair share but has failed to do so.

UPMC's spokesperson said on the Big K Morning Show Monday the healthcare giant would respond favorably if he does, and he should.

ASAP.
