Icy conditions like we're expecting today can wreak havoc on utility companies.

Ice can form on power lines, sometimes adding enough weight to bring them down.
While that can be straining on companies like Duquesne Light, spokesperson Hollie Geightner says its actually slick roads that cause major issues.
Not only do they see increased crashes into power lines, but ice can pile on the lines.
"Our trucks need to get to locations to restore power and if the road conditions make it so that they can't get where they need to go, that's a real problem for us. Hospitals, health centers, other utilities, make sure that they all have power, and then we get to the smaller outages throughout the duration of the storm,” said Geightner.
"Radios, and things like that, flashlights, make sure you have all of those handy. Make sure that you have a supply of non-perishable food items, bottled water, make sure that any medications that require refrigeration, that you have a plan for those"
She says customers who lose power should report it to Duquesne Light, either online or by phone.
