Detectives are looking for a motive after Doctor Idris Evans and his wife were stabbed repeatedly by an intruder just after midnight on Thursday.
Doctor Evans died and his wife was critically injured.
Police say 32-year-old Elijah Hemingway entered the home through an open window, went to the third floor and started stabbing the couple.
Gina Evans told officers Hemingway said he was God and was wearing only underwear.
She also told police she heard her husband call him Elijah.
“We do not know if there was any pre-existing relationship, the woman did not know this male, we are trying to determine if the two males knew each other,” said Allegheny County Assistant Superintendent Victor Joseph during a news conference on Thursday.
Police found Hemingway in neighbor Sandra Lee Trappen's back yard. She was Michael Bartley's guest last night on KDKA Radio.
“I, at that point, my vantage point was just simply looking out a window and being stunned because it’s a very traumatizing event,” said Trappen.
Trappen said Hemingway hid in some of the vegetation that was in her back yard, but police were able to find him within five minutes. He was taken from the scene in an ambulance.
Hemingway was free on non-monetary bond after an arrest for a February break-in at the home of his ex-girlfriend.
According to the criminal complaint in that case, Hemingway was accused of forcing himself into her Overbeck Street home, stealing two iPhones and a $1,200 laptop.
His preliminary hearing on those charges had been continued twice and, on the docket again for October 1.
He's now facing criminal homicide and other charges.
