Eli Heidenreich's dad excited for future, grateful for Pittsburgh's support

In the 7th round of the NFL Draft Mount Lebanon native Eli Heidenreich was selected by his hometown team.

And Eli's story keeps getting better.

After winning WPIAL and State championships at Mt Lebanon in high school, Eli Heidenreich became a record-breaking star at the Naval Academy.

Then he was picked by the Steelers in the 7th round and actually made the 53-man roster on Sunday.

His dad David Heidenreich tells KDKA's Colin Dunlap it keeps getting better and better.

“I think it’s going to escalate, that emotion is going to hit me even more heading into these games this year and there’s a sense of pride, it’s a sense of honor, being a native Pittsburgher and what it means to represent this town and I know that this kid’s going to put everything he can into it,” said Heidenreich.

David adds that the support locally has been amazing and the emotions run high when they realize this a dream coming true.

“We’re grateful and going to do everything we can to represent the city and I know he is as well,” added Heidenreich.

Steelers General Manager Omar Khan told reporters on Monday that Eli earned his spot on the roster.

The Steelers open the season September 13 at home against Atlanta.
