The City of Pittsburgh is preparing for its annual Juneteenth Freedom Day celebration.
Mayor Ed Gainey issued an announcement on Wednesday that Pittsburgh and Stop the Violence Pittsburgh will be partnering up from June 17-June 19.
"African-American history is indeed American history and deserves to be treated as such. Juneteenth is a reminder that service never stops. We must always ensure that change is realized in our cities and streets after it is enshrined into our laws," Mayor Gainey said.
Approximately $60,000 worth of in-kind services will be supported by the city. Among the services will be a main stage, banners in Point State Park, as well as a mobile performance stage.
The Department of Public Works will help with barricades for the mobile stage. Pittsburgh Police will assist with traffic control for the parade and security for the celebration.
On June 19, 2019, Pennsylvania made Juneteenth National Freedom Day a state holiday.
