Gainey will let 2026 budget pass into law without signature

Pittsburgh Mayor Ed Gainey has decided to allow the city's 2026 budget to pass into law without his signature.

Gainey outlined some of his grievances with the newly approved budget in a letter to council.

Despite his concerns, however, the mayor says he recognizes that the bills were adopted by council by margins that could overturn his veto, and says he doesn't wish to unnecessarily prolong the legislative process purely symbolic purposes.

The 2026 budget includes a 20 percent tax hike.
