UPDATE: "We’re heartbroken to share that the second eaglet at the Pittsburgh Glen Hazel nest, GH3, passed away early this morning," PixCams said in a release.

Officials are working to get permissions to investigate the cause of death.

An Eaglet at the Glen Hazel nest has died from an unknown illness.

The eaglet known as GH4 was reported dead Sunday around 10:30 AM Sunday in a statement from the Glen Hazel PixCams team and the Tamarack Wildlife Center.

PixCams says there are several possible reasons for the illness, so testing would need to be done to confirm a cause.

Intervention at an eagle’s nest requires state and federal approval due to protected status of the eagles.

Wildlife officials are monitoring the situation and exploring options to pull the chicks for treatment.

The adult eagles in the nest are also being monitored. PixCams they have noticed the mother is “spending more time than typical resting at the nest, and eating smaller bites than usual.”

The live video stream continues with PixCams saying, “This is a difficult time for all of us who love these eagles. In the spirit of transparency, we will keep the camera live. Please be kind and compassionate. Step away if you need to. Take good care of yourself and others.”
