A red panda is the newest mascot to enter the pantheon of famous Pittsburgh characters like the Pirate Parrot and Iceburgh.

The Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium is welcoming the mascot and is looking for the public to help name it.

You can submit your name idea for just $1 at the Zoo’s website. Money raised from the contest will go toward red panda conservation.

The contest runs now, through May 17. The winner will be announced on May 31.

Alex Cauley, Public Relations manager for the Zoo says the red panda is one of the zoo’s most popular animals. The Red panda is also considered an endangered species.

If you want to see the real red pandas at the Pittsburgh Zoo, it’s best to catch Xia and Marcy in the Zoo Forest Passage area in the early morning and late afternoons, when they’re most active.
