Former Kennywood CEO Harry Henninger Jr. has passed away.
Born in 1945 and better known as “Henny”, he began working for the family business as a teen, which happened to be Pittsburgh’s iconic amusement mark.
He began working in the men’s locker room of the swimming pool, working his way up to CEO, retiring in 2007.
“A visionary leader, Henny guided Kennywood through a renaissance that balanced innovation with tradition, introducing exciting new attractions while preserving the nostalgia generations of visitors cherished.”
Henninger gained local popularity after Rick Sebak’s documentary “Kennywood Memories” was released in the late 1980s on WQED.
He also appeared in Sebak’s national program, “Great Old Amusement Parks”.
Henninger quietly donated countless hours of his time, serving on various non-profit boards including the Fred Rogers Company, Frick Museum, Pittsburgh Park’s Conservancy, The Children’s Home, St. Edmund’s Academy, PA Partnerships for Children, and the International Association of Amusement Parks & Attractions.
A viewing is planned for Sunday June 14 5-8 p.m., Monday June 15 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m., Thomas L. Nied Funeral Home on Washington Avenue and a funeral service on Tuesday, June 16 at 10 a.m. at the Church of the Redeemer on Forbes Avenue with a private internment.
