High levels of industrial chemicals found in waterways near Airport

High levels of industrial chemicals have been detected in waterways near Pittsburgh International.

An environmental watchdog says testing shows high levels of PFAS, known as “forever chemicals”.

Three Rivers Waterkeeper found readings as high as 400 parts per trillion in Montour Run, far above the EPA’s 4 parts per trillion drinking water standards, and says airport discharge reports listed levels topping 50,000 parts per trillion.

PFAS have been linked to firefighting foam once required by the FAA and can build up in the human body over time.

Montour Run flows into the Ohio River, a regional drinking water source.

The Airport Authority tells KDKA Radio it stopped using that foam more than a year ago and has switched to a fluorine-free alternative.
