In 2019, Shop ′n Save closed its Hill District location leaving the neighborhood with no grocery store. The Urban Redevelopment Authority bought the Centre Heldman Plaza and the situation started slowly to turn around.
After years with no grocery store on the Hill, the URA announced last week it is entering into lease negotiations with Salem's Market & Grill, a locally owned company.
Abdullah Salem grew up in Pittsburgh. His family-run business has been in operation on Penn Avenue in the Strip District for 40 years.
The plan is to open a full-service grocery store in the Hill District with 50 to 75 employees.
We applaud the URA's vision and persistence and Mr. Salem for making the best presentation among four finalists!
