OPINION: Hometown Tour: Aliquippa

PITTSBURGH (Newsradio KDKA) - ‘When you come to Aliquippa you are family.’ The kind words of Mayor Dwan B. Walker who warmly welcomed The KDKA Radio Morning Show to Yianni’s Family Restaurant. Truer words are rarely spoken. Terri, the manager, came in on her day off – way earlier than normal – to open the doors and allow Larry, Ronman the engineer, and me to set up and start our broadcast. Thanks to all who stopped by to say ‘hello.’ I’ve said before that if someone wants to know the essence of Western Pennsylvania then all they have to do is spend time in Beaver County. Pride oozes from nearly everyone you meet. Hard work, heart, character, and dedication are handed down through the generations. That tradition shows in the accomplishments of many residents who have fondly called Aliquippa (and many other towns in the area) home: Henry Mancini, Mike Ditka, Darrelle Revis, Ty Law, Shatori Walker- Kimbrough are just some of the countless names who have helped extend that pride worldwide.

From Oscar awards and Heisman trophies to the CIA, Surgeon General’s office, and beyond. The streets of Aliquippa can lead anywhere if you ‘act right, be right, do right.’ Aliquippa and our region helped build the world. Yes, economics and various issues have altered the lifestyle but they have not dimmed the spirit. It was a perfect place to launch our Hometown Tour as we focus on communities that help make Western Pennsylvania one of the most livable spots on the globe.

Sincerely,

Kevin Battle
