Ice jams causing flooding issues north of Pittsburgh

A Flash Flood Warning is in effect through 11:45 a.m. due to an ice jam break.

Northeastern Butler County is in the warning area.

The ice jam on the Allegheny River at Emlenton broke around 8:45 a.m. causing flash flooding downstream.

“If you hear a prolonged blast of the fire siren, residents near the river should leave immediately,” Emlenton Fire Department wrote on Facebook.

Also, flood watch is in effect today through 1 p.m. east and north of Pittsburgh. Butler, Fayette, Indiana, Lawrence and Westmoreland counties are in the watch area.

A half inch of rain and rivers with ice jams can cause flooding and possible flash flooding when ice dams break up.

Ice may redevelop after temperatures drop below freezing over the weekend.

The National Weather Service tells KDKA Radio that impact in the Pittsburgh area is expected to be minimal, but meteorologists will keep an eye on any ice jam flow.
