New legislation in Allegheny County could soon ban law enforcement from concealing their identity while on duty.
County Councilperson DeWitt Walton tells KDKA Radio the ordinance is focused on transparency and accountability, especially during arrests.
“It requires them to identify themselves to identify themselves, it requires their agencies to be responsive, whether state, local or federal,” said Walton.
He says local law can set clear standards for how policing is carried out within county lines.
“If an ICE officer violates this, he’s subject to the penalties of this ordinance, he’s subject to prosecution by the local district attorney,” added Walton.
If approved, violators could face up to $500 in fines and 90 days in jail.
Walton says exceptions would be allowed for health and religious reasons, SWAT operations, and approved undercover work.
