VP Vance says Pitt, other universities,  are undercutting wages of American grad students

Thursday Headlines

Pittsburgh's Headlines: October 8, 2026

Vice President JD Vance announcing a crackdown on immigration work visas Thursday.

And, in his remarks, Vance singled out nine universities, including the University of Pittsburgh for an investigation.

Vance said the schools are undercutting the wages of American grad students by hiring foreign students for about $20,000.

“Those universities are Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Brown, the University of Pittsburgh, UC Davis, Caltech, Arizona State, and MIT,” said VP Vance. “And what we see is that when you employ an American worker as a graduate student, as a researcher, they're making about $20,000 more than someone brought in under a J-1 visa.”

Vance also announced that Microsoft, Adobe and other tech companies would be barred from using work visas.

“We want people to invest in the United States of America, particularly the American technology sector, we are the biggest boosters of your industry, we want you to continue to grow and employee a lot of people but we want you to employ American workers and so our message to Microsoft is, you’re a great American company but you’ve got to hire great American workers,” said Vice President Vance.

No comment yet from the University of Pittsburgh.
