We have reached the midway point of the high school football season Friday, with some terrific performances throughout the region by both teams and individuals.
This season, KDKA Radio will again nominate players each week to join the KDKA Radio Super 7 Awards watch list. Every Monday, a new crop of players will be unveiled based on their efforts that previous Friday night. At the end of the year, KDKA Radio will announce the winners of the award for each WPIAL classification, as well as the Pittsburgh City League.
Here are the top performances from Week 5:
Carden Lippmann, Hempfield
Hempfield picked up a massive win in overtime Friday, and Lippmann was the catalyst.
The senior passed for 340 yards and three touchdowns, while also rushing for 87 yards and another score in a 38-34 win over Canon-McMillan.
The victory was a bounce back for the Spartans, which opened Class 6A action with a 14-7 loss to North Allegheny a week earlier.
Lippmann, in his first year as a starting quarterback, also plays baseball for Hempfield.
Xavier Clark, Beaver Falls
Clark rallied Beaver Falls back for an impressive win Friday night.
The junior rushed for 203 yards and two touchdowns, rallying the Tigers back from an early deficit to beat Freedom 24-13.
Clark, who has played numerous positions in high school career including quarterback, has led Beaver Falls to three straight wins.
Will Waskiewicz, North Catholic
In some high school offenses, pulling in 14 receptions in a season may be considered a relatively high number. Will Waskiewicz made that many catches Friday night alone.
Waskiewicz madę 14 grabs for 196 yards and three touchdowns, as North Catholic dropped Burrell 32-20.
The senior led the WPIAL is receptions and receiving yards Friday, as the Trojans won a second straight game following a three-game losing streak to open the season.
Over the last two weeks, Waskiewicz has made seven touchdown receptions.
Justin Edworthy, Neshannock
Edworthy did a little bit of everything for Neshannock Friday.
On offense, the junior rushed for 193 yards and five touchdowns in a 48-6 win over Mohawk. On defense, he registered two sacks and blocked an extra point in the win.
Earlier in the year, Edworthy blocked a potential game-winning field goal in a victory over rival Laurel.
The Lancers are now 4-1 on the year with three straight victories.
