This season, KDKA Radio will again nominate players each week to join the KDKA Radio Super 7 Awards watch list. Every Monday, a new crop of players will be unveiled based on their efforts that previous Friday night. At the end of the year, KDKA Radio will announce the winners of the award for each WPIAL classification, as well as the Pittsburgh City League.
Here are the top performances from Week 1:
Kymarr Freeman, Seton LaSalle
Freeman started Seton LaSalle’s WPIAL 2A title defense in a major way Friday.
The junior running back rushed for 272 yards on 27 carries and scored six touchdowns in a 48-32 win over a strong North Catholic team.
Freeman found the end zone on runs of 11, 1, 17, 4, 9, and 6 yards in the win.
He has picked up offers from UT-Martin and Bethany.
Brandon Bennett, Montour
Despite dealing with multiple cramps throughout the game, Bennett led Montour to a massive, season-opening win Friday, contributing on both offense and defense.
Bennett rushed for 109 yards and two touchdowns, scoring on runs of 32 and 15 yards, and passed for 188 yards and another score as Montour topped rival Moon, 28-25.
On defense, he flipped the field with two key interceptions, as well.
The junior has picked up a handful of Division I offers, including Pitt, Maryland, UCLA and West Virginia.
Antonio Perkins, Burrell
One of the top rushing quarterbacks in the region, Perkins put on a show with his legs Friday in a 32-7 runaway win over Albert Gallatin.
The junior racked up 222 yards and scored three times on runs of 37, 71, and 28 yards.
In the process, he went over 2,000 career rushing yards.
In addition to football, Perkins is also an exceptional wrestler who finished 4th in the WPIAL last season.
James “Boo Boo” Armstrong, Hopewell
An elite junior quarterback recruit in the region, Armstrong and Hopewell pulled off one of the best wins of Week 1.
Hopewell dropped defending WPIAL and PIAA champion Avonworth 34-14 Friday, making an early season statement in Class 3A.
Armstrong passed for 189 yards and a touchdown and rushed 28 times for 96 yards and two scores in the win.
The three-star recruit committed to Penn State in July.
