Conference play kicked off Friday throughout the WPIAL, with some teams getting an early jump on the postseason chase with victories.
This season, KDKA Radio will again nominate players each week to join the KDKA Radio Super 7 Awards watch list. Every Monday, a new crop of players will be unveiled based on their efforts that previous Friday night. At the end of the year, KDKA Radio will announce the winners of the award for each WPIAL classification, as well as the Pittsburgh City League.
Here are the top performances from Week 4:
Owen Herrick, Central Catholic
Owen Herrick had a pretty good week.
Early in the week, the Vikings’ junior quarterback announced his commitment to Illinois. A couple of days later, he showed why he’s a power conference recruit.
Herrick passed for 339 yards and four touchdowns in a 54-17 win over Norwin to open Class 6A play.
A three-star recruit, Herrick has now passed for 782 yards, nine touchdowns and an interception this season.
Rocco Thompson, Elizabeth Forward
Elizabeth Forward got a stiff test Friday as it attempted to remain unbeaten on the season. Rocco Thompson helped the Warriors pass the test.
The sophomore tailback exploded for 186 rushing yards and three touchdowns in a thrilling 38-33 win over Southmoreland in Interstate Conference action.
Thompson added nine tackles on defense, including two for a loss and a sack in the win.
The win moved Elizabeth Forward to 4-0 on the year.
Brady Secrest, Frazier
Following a tight Week 3 loss to a strong Monessen team, Frazier bounced back with an impressive win Friday.
Brady Secrest led the was, passing for 309 yards and five touchdowns in the 46-7 win in the Tri-County South opener.
The senior added 46 rushing yards and two scores, factoring into all seven of the Commodores’ touchdowns.
The victory moved Frazier to 2-2 on the season.
Bryce Collins, Canon-McMillan
After suffering a pair of competitive losses over the last two weeks, Canon-McMillan hoped to start conference play in a positive way.
They did just that Friday, blowing out Seneca Valley 38-8.
Collins was the star and the workhorse tailback, rushing 27 times for 141 yards and four touchdowns in the triumph.
Also a wrestler, Collins added 32 receiving yards to move the Big Macs to 2-2 this season.
