Richert will be honored for journalistic integrity. Previous winners of The Bill Burns Award include Tunch Ilkin and Craig Wolfley, Lynn Hayes-Freeland and Bob Pompeani.

Richert reflected on his relationships with both Bill Burns and the Rooney family.

"I stepped back when I got the call [from Bartley] and then received the official letter because when I first started at KDKA Television, was Bill Burns' last year," he said. "I thought about Bill Burns was the first TV anchor in this city, so the connection is extraordinary."
