Latest after three students stabbed by another at Carrick High School

One of the victim's has a 'more serious' injury

Carrick High School, where three students were stabbed by another student this morning, has been cleared and determined to be “safe.”

But, out of an abundance of caution, the school will remain in “secure” status through the day Wednesday.

Dena Young, chief of safety for Pittsburgh Public Schools, said the incident happened shortly after school began for the day.

The 16-year-old student who is being questioned by police had trouble with several students prior to today's incident:

“From what the mother of the kid with the knife said that he knew that there was something going on and she told us this morning but it was kind of simultaneous to when this happened, before the school could try to investigate what was going on because as soon as he came in, the incident took place,” said Young.

Young adds the student had arrived late to school, but did enter the building through an area where there is security.

Of the three students injured, one was treated and released at the scene, one was transported to UPMC Children's Hospital in stable condition, and a third was taken to UPMC Mercy with a more serious injury, officials said.

“We are deeply concerned for the students who were injured today, and our thoughts are with them and their families,” said Superintendent Dr. Wayne N. Walters in a statement. “I am grateful to Carrick staff, School Police, PPS Crisis Response team, City of Pittsburgh Police, and first responders for their immediate and coordinated response to keep our school community safe. I especially want to acknowledge the Carrick staff who worked tirelessly to keep students calm in a situation that was anything but calm, and to our students who showed resilience and cooperated with staff as the day continued under difficult circumstances.”
