Lawrence County has been declared a high intensity drug trafficking area by local US Attorney Cindy Chung.
It's now one of five local counties to receive the designation, including Allegheny, Beaver, Washington, and Westmoreland.

Lawrence County has become a very viable and accessible area for drug trafficking because of a steady, large population of people illegally using drugs.
One thing we can look at to why trafficking has now gone up to a high intensity classification, are a network of bisecting highways and interstates in the area to make exports and imports more attractive to Lawrence with its lack of sanctions against drug traffickers.
Chung continues to be proactive in her position amid her nomination, from President Biden, to become a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit.
“We will use these crucial resources to attack the opioid crisis, to curtail cocaine trafficking, and to prevent the widespread distribution of methamphetamine, which has become a serious problem in Western Pennsylvania” states Chung.
She says it will allow the county to receive more federal resources to help combat drug trafficking and abuse.
