A much-needs road renovation project in Allegheny County is finally being addressed.
Aiken Road Extension right near the border of Kennedy and Robinson Townships has been reduced to one lane since 2018 after a road slide was reported.
10 years before that, a landslide was reported in the same spot, causing traffic issues, meaning the community has been dealing with traffic disruptions on Aiken Ext.
since 2008 on and off.
Since 2018, two stop signs have been placed on the road in both directions to control traffic.
There have been many reasons for the delays including designing the best plan to repair the road so it doesn’t happen again.
Kennedy Township is responsible for the road and township manager Greg Clarke says they got the ball rolling in 2019, factoring cost, road signage and other requirements from PennDOT.
Then the pandemic hit and the process had to start over again.
But finally, after over half a decade, work is scheduled to get started later this month.
As long as things go according to plan, work will begin on February 24, closing the road through early May.
The road closure will begin at Clever Road and Aiken Ext. and end at Aiken Road.
You can follow the detour at Aiken Road. That will take you to Beaver Grade Road and then to Silver Lane.
Once the road is closed, crews will have 120 days to complete repairs.
