Man convicted of killing McKeesport woman and unborn child sentenced

Pittsburgh's Headlines: June 2, 2026

Sentencing was handed down Tuesday for 30-year-old Isaac Smith, a McKeesport man convicted last week of killing a woman he'd been dating and her unborn child.

Smith received two consecutive life sentences without parole, the mandatory sentences.

Prosecutors accused Smith of killing Karli Short and her unborn child in 2021 because of his concerns about having fathered the child.

But according the victim's father. former McKeesport and NFL player Brandon Short, “a month before this trial, DNA testing established that the man who killed my daughter was not the biological father of the child she was carrying and for that I am grateful.”

“My grandchild was not murdered by her father, her father did not kill her father, a murdering coward did,” added Short.

Short says his daughter Karli will not be defined by the man who killed her, but by who she was.

The Karli Short Better Tomorrow Foundation has raised over $1 million and has awarded nine scholarships to help support college students whose lives have been affected by gun violence.
