The Penguins will start the season with a new owner and without Mario Lemieux.
The Tribune Review reports Lemieux and partner Ron Burkle sold their minority stake when the Hoffmann Group bought the team from Fenway Sports Group.
There's no word on Lemieux's involvement with the team, but Geoff Hoffmann said during a June news conference they "would love for him to be a part of it”, adding they know what the Hall of Famer means to Pittsburgh and the NHL.
Lemieux bought the team 27 years ago in 1999, saving the Penguins from potentially leaving Pittsburgh.
Under his ownership group, the Penguins won Stanley Cup Championship in 2009, 2016 and 2017 adding to the two he won as a player in 1991 and 1992.
While he was a minority owner under FSG, his relationship was reportedly tenuous with the group.
Early indications show that Lemieux and the Hoffman Group have had a better relationship, early on.
