2025 is going to be a busy year for PennDOT. Here are some of the major projects you need to know about.
The construction season is about to begin and there are major projects that drivers will encounter around the region.
Among them, the ongoing work on the Commercial Street Bridge between the Squirrel Hill Tunnel and the Edgewood/Swissvale exit along the Parkway East.
PennDOT's Jason Zang says the busy section handles 100,000 cars a day.
“Nine overnight full closures of the Parkway,” said Zang. “There’ll be full weekend closures of the Parkway. Detours of 376, there will be 35 extended weeknight, single-lane restrictions on eastbound 376.”
Also, ongoing work on Route 51 will take place with a one mile long, single lane restriction in each direction is scheduled for this year.
Zang adds they'll be letting out bids for 57 projects this year including proposed flood improvements along the bathtub section of the Parkway.
“My goodness, we’ve been dealing with the bathtub here,” said Zang. “It’s been flooding since, I think 2016, on us so, this is a 30 to 40-million-dollar project. If it were easy, we would’ve had it done already.
Among the dozens of other projects, work will begin soon on the Route 28 Wrong Way Detection System designed to alert drivers and emergency officials when someone enters the highway from the wrong way.
And, a roughly $60 million preservation project for the McKeesport Duquesne Bridge which will last for years.
