Nearly 5 years after the Hill District’s only grocery store closed, another is opening.

Salem’s Market will open on Thursday, February 8at 1850 Centre Avenue. Hours will be from 8 a.m. – 8 p.m.

Items you would find at a typical grocery story along with items Salem’s is known for at its market and grill location in the Strip District.

“Halal meats, fresh produce purchased from local farms, dairy products, breads, international spices and sweet treats” are just some of the items that will be available according to spokesperson KB Jones.

Jones said the kind of items and food that will be available is what the community wanted.

Due to the owner’s religious beliefs there will be no pork sold along with no cigarettes or lottery available.

After five years without a grocery store, Jones asks the community have patience with the new store opening.

“To present a grocery store years after a community has suffered from a food desert can be challenging because the expectations are high,” said Jones. “This is for the community. It’s what the community needed and asked for so, we’re asking for grace and patience as we provide all the essential grocery items and more for the neighborhood. We’re happy to be here and through God, we’ll be here for a very long time.”
