The recently merged Catholic elementary schools in the Diocese of Pittsburgh have new names.

The school formed by merging Saint Gabriel of the Sorrowful Virgin in Whitehall and Saint Elizabeth of Hungary in Pleasant Hills will now be named Mother of Mercy Academy.

Guardian Angel Academy is the new name for the school consisting of Saint Margaret of Scotland in Green Tree and Saint Philip in Crafton.

Students, parents and staff from all four of the schools were involved in naming of the newly created schools.

Bishop David Zubik selected the new names from among suggestions submitted.

“I wish to express my deep appreciation for our students, parents, principals, and all involved for their efforts to assure the success of Mother of Mercy Academy, Guardian Angel Academy, and the future of Catholic education in the South Hills,” Bishop Zubik said. “I was happy to hear about the collaboration that went into the name suggestions. We celebrate this milestone in the journey of our schools.”
