There has always been an abundance of conspiracy theories and many Americans simply don't believe what they're told.
For starters, a survey published Monday by NewsGuard found 1 in 4 Americans believe the recent shooting at the White House correspondents’ dinner was staged.
There was a political divide.
Roughly 1 in 3 democrats believe the event was staged compared to 1 in 8 Republicans.
NewsGuard says 24 percent of adults believed the shooting was staged while 45 percent felt it was legitimate.
An editor at NewsGuard says the skepticism shows that people on all sides of the political spectrum are distrustful of this administration and the media but willing to trust unverified information they see on line.
Another senior researcher says when governments or institutions hide the truth, it's easier to believe in a conspiracy.
