Mayor O'Connor's first executive order to speed up development

Pittsburgh Mayor Corey O'Connor's first full day in office included fast action on permitting.

An executive order signed by O'Connor sends the message his administration wants to accelerate growth.

But the new mayor says the order is not limited to big developments.

“If you want to do a project at your house, it shouldn’t take that long to get it approved,” said O’Connor. “If you want to open a small business, we have to encourage you to do it a lot faster so we have to do our own job of getting you that permit.”

For example, O'Connor said it can take as little as four weeks to get a permit in New York.

The mayor is calling on city departments involved in permitting to review and streamline the process.

“It’s multiple departments working on one permit, how do we speed that up,” said O’Connor.

The new mayor wants applicants to get answers about permit problems more quickly and approvals by a certain time.
