An off-duty Oakdale police officer was shot and killed during a road rage incident Sunday night.
Around 10:35 p.m., Allegheny County 911 received a report of a shooting in the 400 Block of Fountain St. Police say they found two men who had been shot. They were both taken to the hospital in critical condition, where the off-duty officer, identified as 23-year-old Charles Stipetich, was pronounced dead. The second man, 40-year-old Kevin McSwiggen, underwent emergency surgery to treat a gunshot wound to the torso.
McSwiggen allegedly told police he started following a car that cut him off near Fountain St. Dash cam video from McSwiggen's car allegedly later shows a fight between him and Stipetich, then the sound of a gunshot. Stipetich appears to check himself for a wound, then fire a gun at McSwiggen before falling over.
McSwiggen was charged Monday with criminal homicide.
"Although he was only with the Oakdale Police Department for a short amount of time, his desire and spirit for community service and police work was a beacon of light," Oakdale Borough officials said in a statement. "We offer our deepest condolences to his family and friends, and all that cared for him. May his memories be a blessing."
