Over 20 dogs involved in fighting ring rescued in Beaver County

Beaver County authorities are investigating a case that left 23 dogs injured and in need of care.

Beaver County Humane Society Shelter Manager Cailin Smith-Rankin tells KDKA Radio the dogs were suffering from hypothermia and injuries linked to dog fighting.

“There were some that needed medications for skin issues, infections and then things that were more, extreme injuries so things that required our vet to actually do surgery on them to repair what was wrong with them,” said Smith-Rankin.”

The situation has put a big strain on the already crowded shelter.

“It legitimately doubled our population overnight, in the middle of the snow storm, which is quite interesting but it’s really hard for us because it puts an impact on so many different resources,” said Smith-Rankin.

She adds the biggest resource that’s been affected is time.

Smith-Rankin says families can help by fostering, donating supplies, or volunteering.

Authorities expect the dogs to remain at the shelter for at least two weeks as the investigation continues.
