The debate has raged for a very long time but on Wednesday, the state house spoke very clearly on the issue of public versus private in high school athletics.
The vote was an overwhelming 178-23 to allow the PIAA to establish separate playoffs in PA for boundary and non-boundary schools.
That means there would be separate playoffs for public high schools and private, charter and parochial schools.
It is far from a done deal but long time Post-Gazette high school sports expert Mike White says this is unprecedented.
“It is a big thing, I think, because of where it could go and it has never gotten to this point before, where it goes from here, the Senate will decide,” said White. “There could be a vote from the Senate as early as June.”
Those in favor this are hoping to get the same bi-partisanship support and get this done in the State Senate.
