We applaud the middle school students at Burrell’s Huston Middle School for their forward thinking in helping draft legislation that would make a recess period mandatory in Pennsylvania.
The students decided to turn a class room writing assignment into an initial phase of legislation that would require schools to have a thirty-minute unstructured recess every day thus giving students K through twelve a half hour daily break from structured learning.
Pennsylvania is one of a handful of states that does not protect unstructured recess.
The students have met with Pennsylvania Representative Bob Brooks of Murrysville who has presented the bill in legislative form to members of the Pennsylvania House.
Representative Brooks hopes to have the students present their proposed legislation to a house committee. He believes the bill will easily pass in the house and hopefully move on to the senate.
Here’s hoping that the bill passes and a tip of the cap to the students at Burrell’s Huston Middle School.
