PennDOT gearing up for the closure of the Parkway East next month.
The Commercial Street Bridge replacement will begin at 9 p.m. on July 10.
PennDOT's Jason Zang says there are some new changes for the week of July 6.
“Ardmore Boulevard (Route 30) under the Parkway from Morrow Road to Britton Road will have a right lane restriction in each direction,” said Zang. “I-376 in each direction from Churchhill (Exit 79B) to Edgewood (Exit 77) will have a single-lane closure nightly from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. for prep work. The Boulevard of the Allies in the northbound direction from McDivit Place to the Boulevard of the Allies slip ramp from Fifth Avenue will have a right lane restriction put into place.”
Pittsburgh Regional Transit is urging drivers to use mass transit during the closure, reminding them about the Park and Ride lots and routes along the East Busway.
It will be suspending construction along the University Line in Oakland while the Parkway is closed, reducing lane restrictions to try and keep traffic moving.
PennDOT says it will get right to work when the Parkway East closes.
The old Commercial Street Bridge will need to be demolished. PennDOT District 11 Executive Director Jason Zang that will be the longest part of the work.
The new bridge, which is completed, will then be slid into place using hydraulic jacks.
The Parkway East is expected to reopen on August 3.
Crews are testing the system that will put the new bridge into place on Thursday. That is causing some restrictions.
Commercial Street/Forward Avenue is closed between Whipple Street and Summerset Drive until 4:00 PM Thursday.
During this time, Nine Mile Run Trail will be closed to all bicycle and pedestrian traffic between the Nine Mile Run parking lot in Swisshelm Park and the Frick Park Commercial Street Parking lot in Squirrel Hill.
