The full effects of the Parkway East closure will arrive Monday morning as thousands of drivers detour around the project to replace the Commercial Street Bridge. And, even if the work stays on schedule, motorists in the city’s Eastern neighborhoods will have to adapt for over three weeks.
The phrase “pack your patience” is likely to be repeated so often, it may become a cliche. Drivers will be challenged to stay calm, especially in the first few days of the shutdown. PennDOT is advising motorists to use a tool at 511PA to evaluate which detours to take and to do it before they get behind the wheel.
Others will deal with the closure by taking a vacation or working from home.
But if you’re driving, remember KDKA Radio will provide continual traffic updates in the morning and afternoon for the duration. This can be called a short term pain for long term gain scenario. PennDOT is replacing another of the state's deteriorating bridges.
Remember the collapse of the Fern Hollow Bridge? We don't want a repeat, so 25 days of detours and delays doesn’t seem so awful.
