Traffic along the Parkway East is being impacted after PennDOT says its fiber optic cables were vandalized, knocking out traffic cameras and electronic message boards.
PennDOT’s Lori Musto told KDKA Radio how critical those cameras and message boards are in managing daily traffic flow for commuters.
"So we lost basically all of our vision and out ability to notify the public if there's an accident ahead, there's congestion ahead, we have multiple construction projects along the Parkway East and we utilize that system to monitor traffic. So we lost the ability to monitor that traffic, monitor for accidents, and notify the public" she said.
PennDOT has filed a criminal complaint with Local and State Police as crews work to repair the lines and restore service.
