Data shows pedestrian crash numbers up slightly in PA in 2021

After another local pedestrian crash last night on McKnight Road, News Radio KDKA's Shelby Cassesse is taking a closer look at how frequently it is happening in our area.

Pedestrian crashes have fluctuated year to year statewide, according to PennDOT data, but dropped in 2020 by almost half.

In District 11, which includes Allegheny, Beaver and Lawrence Counties, traffic engineer Todd Kravits said the trends were similar.

Around 400 pedestrian crashes in 2019 and a drop in 2020.

“In the midst of the pandemic, a lot of people weren’t out walking about in some of these areas.”

Preliminary data for 2021 shows a slight uptick from 2020, but not back up to 2019 levels. He could not comment on Wednesday's crash in particular, as they're still working to gather information.
