PA in middle of largest measles outbreak in three decades

Thursday headlines

Pittsburgh's Headlines: October 15, 2026

Pennsylvania is currently experiencing its largest measles outbreak in more than three decades, with cases climbing to 1,222 across 42 counties as of October 2026.

That's an increase of 86 since last Friday's report.

Fueled by low vaccination rates, the highly contagious virus has resulted in at least 225 hospitalizations and five confirmed deaths since spreading rapidly from its initial cluster in April.

The Department is still working to confirm a measles-related death in Franklin County.

This explosive local surge makes Pennsylvania the primary hotspot in what is now the worst year for measles nationwide since 1991.

Locally, two cases are reported in Allegheny County, two in Westmoreland, three in Armstrong and 34 in Indiana County.
