The PIAA issued guidelines this week allowing high school athletes to receive compensation for their name, image and likeness, just as college athletes do.
We say it was the right decision.
First, there’s wide support.
The PIAA board of directors voted 25-4 to approve the NIL policy. Almost two dozen states have done the same.
Second, the policy includes needed restrictions, including: alcohol, gambling, tobacco and more.
NIL deals cannot be used as a recruitment tool and cannot be offered by anyone affiliated with a school. This includes booster clubs and coaches. The commitment to excel in high school athletics is almost a full-time job for some.
Why not give them an opportunity to capitalize on their talent?
