Another multi-million-dollar gift to the City of Pittsburgh.

The five-year, $5 million investment in the City from the University of Pittsburgh will go to three targeted areas: Neighborhood parks, the Main and Main neighborhood business program and public safety.

In a statement, Chancellor Joan Gabel says the success of the University and the City has been intertwined, and Mayor O'Connor points to Pitt's history of investment in the City.

“I think if you look at what Pitt’s Small Business Development Center has worked alongside the neighborhood businesses for years and years and years, that was a big area of focus for us but we also knew it was a big focus for the mayor so, we thought the tie-in made a lot of sense,” Senior Vice Chancellor Kevin Washo tells KDKA Radio

Washo says Pitt felt the time was right to make this donation, the Alignment was there, with the new administration, and the City on a new, upward trajectory.

Controller Rachael Heisler also issued a separate statement saying the voluntary payment plan is encouraging and will lead to students staying here after they graduates, as she did.

Heisler's statement also says she will continue to make sure this and the other recently announced private-public partnerships are transparent and the payments directly benefit City residents.
