Pittsburgh officials gear up for fourth of July celebration

Pittsburgh's Headlines: July 2, 2026

Pittsburgh safety officials are preparing for a busy and extremely hot fourth of July celebration.

And, Pittsburgh Police are adding new technology.

As thousands are expected to gather Downtown for Independence Day festivities, Pittsburgh police say they'll have officers stationed throughout the area along with several tools to help monitor crowds and respond to emergencies.

Police Chief Jason Lando says one addition this year will give officers another view from above.

“Our drones allow us to identify issues, respond faster and keep people safe, especially with large crowds during special events,” said Chief Lando.

Lando says the city isn't placing any additional restrictions on recreational drones, but operators must follow FAA rules, including temporary flight restrictions around Point State Park and the North Shore.

City leaders say police, fire and EMS have coordinated their plans to keep people safe.

Public Safety Director Sheldon Williams says any type of criminal behavior will not be tolerated.

As for the Market Square chaperone policy, city officials say that rule is set by the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership, which manages the space under its event permit.

With the Fourth of July holiday expected to be extremely hot and humid, EMS Chief Amera Gilchrist says extra crews will be stationed across the city to respond quickly if needed.

City Parks and Emergency Management will be providing water buffaloes, misting stations and the Pittsburgh Pirates will provide free cooling towels throughout the celebration area.

Gilchrist also encourages people to stay hydrated, watch for signs of heat-related illness and call 911 immediately if someone needs emergency medical care.
