Pittsburgh City Council voted unanimously Tuesday to prohibit cat declawing in the city.

The ordinance passed 9-0 and will now head to Mayor Bill Peduto's desk.

It prevents the declawing of cats for "cosmetic or aesthetic reason or reasons of convenience for keeping or handling the cat."

Cat owners are still able to declaw their cats for "therapeutic purposes" necessary for the cat's health, like mitigating illness or infection.

Violators face up to a $500 fine.
