Flash Flood Watch in effect day after heavy storms

Pittsburgh Headlines: July 6, 2026

A Flood Watch is in effect Monday through 11 p.m.

The National Weather Service says slow-moving thunderstorms may produce heavy rain which could result in flash flooding on saturated ground.

The possible storms come after Sunday afternoon's rainfall set a new record for July 5.

As of 6:30 Sunday night, 1.97 inches of rain came down at Pittsburgh International.

Chris Leonardi with the National Weather Service says most of the heavier rain totals were north of Pittsburgh with isolated areas getting two to three inches of rain.

The heaviest rain fell in Butler, Armstrong and Indiana Counties.

One of those towns hit hard was Slippery Rock which made an emergency declaration after many roads became impassable.

State officials said Pennsylvania had 200 road closures due to the storms, and 75 are still closed, including two bridges in Armstrong County.

PEMA director Randy Padfield urged those with damaged homes and cars to begin documenting it, though adding, the extent of the storm may not meet thresholds for Federal assistance. Governor Shapiro said he's grateful to the state workers who left their families on a holiday weekend to follow the storms.

If you’re looking for a silver lining, the rain did put an end to an oppressive heat wave, with no 90-degree days expected any time soon.
