Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank program expands to deliver fresh food to those in need

A food assistance program is trying to reach more people during the winter.

The Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank Program Green Grocer typically hosts farmer's markets to bring fresh foods to neighborhoods without grocery store access.

With the markets difficult to host in the winter, supervisor Joshua Anderegg says they're now doing delivery.

"I've heard lots of stories of folks who can't get out of their house, who can't leave their neighborhood, who don't have transportation and the closest grocery store is miles and miles away on buses that sometimes they're scared to get on."

Erma Coy in the Upper Hill is one of the program's first customers and she said she likes it. "What would I do? I don't drive any more; don't have a car. So to me, this is perfect."

The program's food is often less expensive than grocery store food.

Customers in the program can use their EBT/SNAP benefits to pay.
