The Pittsburgh Bureau of Police have announced the death of one of its equine officers.
“Spirit”, the horse, passed after suffering an inoperable bone fracture.
Spirit joined the police in 2017 as the second horse to join the relaunched Mounted Unit.
Donated to the department by former Pittsburgh Steelers defensive end Stephon Tuitt.
“Spirit was a ‘people person horse’ from his first day on the job,” Police said on a social media post. “He enjoyed countless school visits, parades, and events, building bridges between our police officers and the communities they serve.”
“Spirit was our gentle giant. He was always calm, always patient, just good at his job all around.” Said Mounted Unit coordinator, Officer Jamie Bush. “We’re heartbroken, but we know his life was full of as much joy as he brought to our friends and neighbors.”
